Is Weed Legal in Thailand? The 2026 Traveller's Guide

Thailand decriminalised cannabis in 2022 and has been fine-tuning the rules ever since. If you're landing in Phuket in 2026, here's the short version: recreational use in licensed spaces is allowed, medical use is protected, and the market is now regulated — not the free-for-all it was in 2022 and 2023.

The short version

• Buying and consuming flower, hash, rosin and edibles is legal for anyone 20 and over at a licensed shop or bar.
• You need a valid ID or passport. Tourists are welcome — no Thai residency required.
• Public smoking in the street is discouraged and can get you a fine. Smoke inside licensed venues, at your accommodation (if allowed), or in designated areas.
• You can't drive under the influence. Same rules as alcohol — a taxi or Grab is the move.
• Taking cannabis across borders is still a serious crime. What you buy in Thailand stays in Thailand.

How it actually works in Phuket

Phuket has one of the highest concentrations of licensed cannabis shops in the country. Kata, Karon, Patong and Rawai are packed with them. The good ones display their licence, have proper packaging with THC/CBD figures, and let you smell before you buy. If a place feels sketchy, walk out — there are ten more within a five-minute stroll.
