Thai Stick: The Legendary Landrace That Started It All

Before Cali packs and modern hybrids, there was Thai Stick — sativa flower tied to a bamboo skewer with hemp string. This is where it came from.

Thai Stick: The Legendary Landrace That Started It All

Ask any old head what the strongest weed of the 70s was, and they'll say Thai Stick. Bright, cerebral, wildly potent for its time, and packaged in the most iconic way weed has ever been sold: cannabis buds tied to a stick of bamboo with hemp string, sometimes dipped in hash oil for extra kick.

Where it came from

Thai Stick was grown in the northeast of Thailand — Isaan province and the hill regions bordering Laos — by farmers who had been cultivating landrace sativa for generations. The plants were tall, thin-leafed, slow to finish, and packed with the kind of trippy, uplifting sativa energy that modern indica-dominant hybrids just don't touch.

How it was actually made

Freshly harvested buds were skewered onto foot-long bamboo sticks, tied down with lengths of hemp fibre, and left to cure slowly under palm leaves. Some farmers would dip the finished sticks in warm hash oil — an early cannabis concentrate — before wrapping the whole thing in banana leaf to age. The result was a cured, oil-infused, tied bundle of pure landrace sativa.

The Vietnam connection

American soldiers stationed in Vietnam and Thailand during the war years brought Thai Stick back to the US. By the late 70s it was the most sought-after cannabis in California, New York and Amsterdam. Genetics from those original Thai lines went on to shape Haze, which shaped every sativa hybrid you've ever smoked.

Can you still get Thai Stick today?

True landrace Thai Stick is rare. Most of what you'll see labelled 'Thai Stick' in a shop is a modern sativa dressed up in bamboo. The genetics survive in specialty seed banks and a few Thai farms still growing landrace, but the classic 70s product is basically a museum piece.

That said — Thai-grown sativa is very much alive. Our Thai grown menu carries strains from Thai farmers using modern genetics on Thai soil, and it hits closer to the original spirit than anything imported.

Come try what Thai farmers are growing right now. Different world from a Cali pack — and it's on our Thai grown menu.
